Humble beginnings

A Pillar of the Community

In 2012, Kate Adams was concerned with the amount of children in her community not receiving formal education. As a trained nurse and lifelong educator, she was moved to action and established a one-room study class, affectionately nicknamed 'Old Lady Piazza' school, where local children could receive a meal and a few hours of primary education a day. The need was overwhelming and the study class quickly outgrew the confines of the single room.In 2013, Kate Adams and her husband, Dr. Z'Sherman Adams Jr., began construction on the first SAMS campus to serve the primary education needs of the community they love and call home. SAMS opened its doors in 2014, enduring the West African Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic. SAMS has stood strong and even expanded, establishing a second campus in 2020 to serve junior and senior high school students.

be the difference

Support a Student

SAMS is located in the Peace Community of Lower Margibi County, an impoverished community where families face financial barriers of placing and keeping their children in school. Hence, why the study class was originally created in 2012. Your support will make a difference! When you donate to SAMS, 100% of funds are used to support students experiencing financial hardship. Donations will be applied toward school fees, uniforms, transportation, meals, and summer enrichment programs.

Honoring a legacy

Who is Sherman Adams Sr.?

The late Sherman Adams Sr. was the father of Dr. Z'Sherman Adams Jr., a single parent of 10 children, a Selma, Alabama native, and a United States Army veteran. Sherman Sr. believed in education of both the mind and soul and was able to nurture his children based upon this belief when their mother passed away in a fatal accident. In his memory, honor, and legacy, SAMS bares his name.
